Sugar production in India drops by 17.7 lakh tonnes compared to previous season
India’s 2024-25 sugar production dropped by 17.70 lakh tonnes y/y to 95.10 lakh tonnes by December 31, with 493 mills crushing 1095.65 lakh tonnes of cane. The recovery rate declined to 8.68% (from 9.17% last season). Maharashtra produced 29.90 lakh tonnes, Uttar Pradesh 32.60 lakh tonnes, and Karnataka 20.55 lakh tonnes. NFCSF estimates total output at 280 lakh tonnes.
With sugar mills continuing operations in India during the 2024-25 season, sugarcane crushing and sugar production are lower compared to the previous season.
Sugar production in India dropped by 17.70 lakh tonnes compared to the previous season. According to data released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), as of December 31, 2024, crushing for the 2024-25 season is underway in 493 sugar mills across the country. A total of 1095.65 lakh tonnes of sugarcane has been crushed, resulting in the production of 95.10 lakh tonnes of sugar. In comparison, during the same period in the previous season, 518 sugar mills had crushed 1229.91 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 112.80 lakh tonnes of sugar.
The sugar recovery rate in the country is lower than the previous season. As of December 31, 2024, the average sugar recovery rate stands at 8.68%, compared to 9.17% during the same period in the previous season.
In terms of state-wise sugar production, 190 mills in Maharashtra have crushed 347.67 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 29.90 lakh tonnes of sugar.
In Uttar Pradesh, all sugar mills have commenced crushing operations. A total of 121 sugar mills have crushed 366.29 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 32.60 lakh tonnes of sugar. In Karnataka, the third-largest sugar-producing state, four more sugar mills are operating compared to the previous season. Currently, 77 sugar mills are in operation, up from 73 mills during the same period last season. Sugar production in the state has reached 20.55 lakh tonnes after crushing 241.76 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.
According to the NFCSF, sugar production for the 2024-25 season is estimated to reach 280 lakh tonnes.
