Sugar production updates by NFCSF till March 31

As of March 31, 2025, India’s sugar production for the 2024-25 season reached 248.50 lakh tonnes, down from 302.50 lakh tonnes in the previous season. This decline is attributed to reduced output in major sugar-producing states, with Maharashtra producing 80.10 lakh tonnes, Uttar Pradesh 87.70 lakh tonnes, and Karnataka 39.90 lakh tonnes. Despite the decrease, the government has permitted the export of 1 million metric tons of sugar for the current season, ensuring sufficient domestic stock levels.
The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has released sugar production updates till March 31.
According to data released by the NFCSF, as of March 31, 2025, crushing for the 2024-25 season is underway in 113 sugar mills across the country. A total of 2653.26 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, resulting in the production of 248.50 lakh tonnes of sugar. In comparison, during the same period in the previous season, 204 sugar mills were operational, and crushing had reached 2981.04 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 302.50 lakh tonnes of sugar.
The sugar recovery rate in the country is lower than in the previous season. As of March 31, 2025, the average sugar recovery rate stands at 9.37%, compared to 10.15% during the same period in the previous season.
As per NFCSF data, in terms of state-wise production, mills in Maharashtra have crushed 843.16 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 80.10 lakh tonnes of sugar.
In Uttar Pradesh, sugar mills have crushed 904.12 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 87.70 lakh tonnes of sugar. Sugar production in Karnataka has reached 39.90 lakh tonnes after crushing 469.41 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, according to the sugar body.
Experts say the decline in sugar production across the three major producing states—Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh—has contributed to the drop in production figures for this crushing season.
