The Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) estimates the current season to end in September with net production of 262 lakh tonnes, after diverting almost 33 lakh tonnes for ethanol production. The carry over stock for the 2025-2026 sugar year is expected to be 52 lakh tonnes.

Sugar production for the 2024-2025 marketing season (October to September) was 257.44 lakh tonnes till May 15 while it was 316.33 lakh tonnes for the same period last season.

As many as 535 factories started production in October 2024 and 533 have stopped production now. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu usually resume production during the special season in June/July.

According to the association, sugarcane planting in Karnataka and Maharashtra is showing significant improvement because of favourable monsoon in 2024. In the northern belt, including Uttar Pradesh, varietal replacement initiatives are expected to yield tangible benefits.

Forecast of normal southwest monsoon this year too has given hopes of a good cane production for next season, it said.
