Sugarcane : Ban lifted; Start the breeding season on October 15
In Karnataka, the state government succumbed to the pressure of Kolhapur farmers’ organizationssugar caneWithdrawal of the proposed ban will increase the difficulties faced by the border factories in Maharashtra. There is a move to start the factories in Karnataka from October 15, and at least in Maharashtra, there is a demand that the season should be allowed to start at the same time. The daily filtration capacity of the eight factories on the border is 96 thousand metric tons.
This year Pasugar caneSugarcane growth has not been very good due to irregularity. Therefore, the factory is afraid that the season will last even 90 days or not. The government has banned the export of sugarcane abroad as if the sugarcane goes to the neighboring Karnataka, mainly the cooperative sugar mills will suffer. However, it was strongly opposed by farmers’ organizations.
The government finally withdrew the ban on Wednesday after the farmers were attacked saying why they had imposed such a ban if they were to get a good price. Therefore, although the farmers will now be allowed to plant sugarcane anywhere, it has created a new crisis for the factories in Maharashtra. There have been complaints in the assembly of the state that there are clashes in factories in Karnataka.
Factories there do not offer competitive rates for sugarcane. Apart from this, getting the announced bills is also difficult. Therefore, planting sugarcane in Karnataka only affects the farmers, but the farmers plant sugarcane because of the risk of clearing the fields. If this is to be avoided then the factories are demanding permission to start the season early in Maharashtra as well.
It is estimated that there will be at least 15 percent reduction in silage in the coming season. Sugarcane is mainly exported from Maharashtra to Karnataka and to some extent to Gujarat. Along with Kolhapur, some sugarcane from Sangli, Solapur and factories in North Maharashtra go to Gujarat factories.
