The government has successfully cleared ₹1,08,111 crore in sugarcane dues for the 2023-24 season, making sugarcane India’s second most valuable crop. This reflects effective policies by the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) to ensure timely payments to farmers. Additionally, ethanol production capacity has surged, with states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh leading, contributing to both energy self-sufficiency and farmer empowerment.
The government has implemented several important measures in the 2023-24 season to ensure timely payments for sugarcane, resulting in a notable increase in payments.
According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), dues of around Rs 1,08,111 crore in the 2023-24 sugar season (till October 16, 2024) have been cleared out which makes sugarcane India’s the second most valuable crop that ensures high income for farmers.
This achievement reflects the effective policies of the DFPD, which aim to secure fair prices for farmers and bring stability to the agricultural sector.
In addition to sugarcane price payments, there has also been an increase in ethanol production capacity in the country.
According to the DFPD, India’s Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) is progressing successfully. States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Sikkim, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh have exceeded their ethanol production capacities, enhancing not only energy self-sufficiency but also empowering farmers. These states are also assisting smaller states with their ethanol supply needs.
As per the DFPD, India’s ethanol production capacity has risen from 518 crore liters in 2017-18 to an impressive 1,623 crore liters in 2023-24 (as of August 31, 2024), demonstrating the government’s commitment to fostering a greener future.
