Last year, during the agitation of Swabhimani Farmers’ Association for the demand of Rs. 400 per tonne of broken sugarcane, unknown persons set fire to a tractor carrying sugarcane for a private factory in Nimshirgaon (Shirol).
This incident happened on Tuesday (24 hours) around night. The tractor was heavily damaged in the fire. On behalf of the Swabhimani Shetkar Sangathan, the agitation is going on for the demand of four hundred rupees.
Swabhimani Shektar Sangathan had given an implicit warning that sugar factories should not be started without paying Rs.400. The Ghodawat jaggery factory at Chipri (Shirol) started cutting sugarcane without announcing the first sugarcane harvest. Around last night, when sugarcane was being transported from Nimshirgaon, the angry workers set fire to the sugarcane tractor.
