Sugarcane weighing: Karnataka govt takes measures to ensure transparency and fairness

In response to concerns raised by sugarcane farmers in Karnataka regarding weight measurements at sugar factories, the state government has approved the installation of weighbridges near these factories. These weighbridges will be managed by the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) to ensure transparency and fairness in weight measurements, addressing farmers’ grievances about unfair practices.

In response to concerns raised by sugarcane farmers about weight measurements at sugar factories, the Karnataka government has taken decisive action to safeguard farmers’ interests.

To promote transparency and fairness, the government has approved the installation of weighbridges near sugar factories, which will be managed by the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), reported Hans India. Recently, the central government set sugarcane prices under the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) system, which farmers claim is inadequate.

Farmers argue that the FRP is insufficient and does not cover the full cost of cultivation. Therefore, sugarcane prices need to be increased.

“The price set by the government is unprofitable for us; it only increases our losses,” farmers stated during the protests.

Farmer organizations have warned of escalating protests, including demonstrations outside the residence of Sugar Minister Shivanand Patil, unless their demands are addressed. While the installation of weighbridges is seen as a positive step toward ensuring fair practices, farmers remain firm in their demand for better prices and recognition of their efforts.
