Sunflower production bumper at Amtali
In Amtali Upazila, sunflower production flourishes on 370 hectares, supported by collaborative efforts to combat climate change. Sunflower seeds yield nutritious oil and feed. Farmers receive aid and training, with 70 exhibitions held. Farmer Nagen Chandra Haldar praises sunflower’s profitability, expanding cultivation. BARGUNA, May 28: Sunflower production is bumper in Amtali Upazila of the district.
According to Upazila Agriculture office sources, this year sunflower was cultivated on 370 hectares of land at Amtali.
In facing climate change, Agriculture Ministry, Climate Trust, and Environment Ministry are working together to get revolutionary success in producing oil seeds in drought-prone and salty areas.
Oil seeds of sunflower can be collected within 90-100 days. Nutritious edible oil is produced from sunflower seeds. Bran of the seeds is used as feed of duck, hen and fish.
After meeting their own needs, farmers are selling their surplus oil and seeds. The oil production stands at 16-18 litres from one maund of seed.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension-Amtali, farmers have cultivated sunflower through 70 exhibitions in different villages; a total of 1,000 farmers were given seeds, fertiliser, and cash money.
Farmer Nagen Chandra Haldar of Sonakhali Village said, “I took sunflower seeds from other person in the last year. I cultivated sunflower on a limited land and I became benefitted. It is a very profitable crop.”
“This season in cooperation with the agriculture office, I have cultivated sunflower on 130 decimals of land,” he added.
Sunflower was cultivated in Holdia, Chawra, Atharagachhia in the upazila, Amtali Sadar and Arpangashia unions at a large scale. Sunflower has been cultivated on raised lands in these areas.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Isha said, the sunflower is a very profitable crop. “We are expecting a bumper yield. In order to face climate change, 70 exhibitions were given to farmers to inspire them. They were given seeds and fertiliser. We are providing them with advice to cultivate sunflower.”
