Sunflower seed purchase prices in Ukraine have fallen amid falling sunflower oil prices.
Ukraine’s sunflower prices fell as rising supply and weaker sunflower oil prices reduced speculative demand. Farmers harvested 8.73 million tons from 90% of fields, with yields below last year’s. Sunflower oil fell to $1,220–1,230/t, pressured by cheaper palm oil, widening India’s price gap to $200–220/t and shifting demand.
Increased sunflower supply and falling sunflower oil prices led to a decrease in speculative demand for sunflower in Ukraine and a price rollback.
In Ukraine, producers have managed to accelerate the sunflower harvest despite high humidity and intermittent precipitation. As of November 6, 8.729 million tons of sunflower have been harvested from 90% of the planned area, or 4.61 million hectares, with a yield of 1.89 tons per hectare (last year, 9.684 million tons were harvested from 95% of the area, with a yield of 2.06 tons per hectare). Due to excessive precipitation, some of the harvest in the west was lost, so the total harvest in Ukraine will not exceed 10-10.5 million tons (compared to 11.5 million tons last year).
Sunflower seed purchase prices fell another 200-500 UAH/t over the week to 27,400-28,500 UAH/t, or $573-595/t excluding VAT (for 50% oil content), with delivery to the plant, following a further drop in sunflower oil prices. It should be noted that some processors significantly reduced prices, having accumulated sufficient stocks, while others continue to maintain high prices to increase supplies.
Sunflower oil bid prices in Ukraine fell another $10-20/t over the week to $1,220-1,230/t for November-December port delivery, having already lost around $40-50/t over the past two weeks, under pressure from a 10% monthly decline in palm oil prices. In the Indian market, the spread between sunflower and palm oil prices has widened to $200-220/t, leading local processors to once again switch to purchasing cheaper palm oil.
In the coming weeks, the market will remain in anticipation of the completion of the sunflower harvest in the Black Sea region, and prices will be adjusted in accordance with updated balances.
According to the European Commission, sunflower production in the EU countries in 2025 will amount to only about 8.5 million tons, which, although 3% higher than the 2024 crop failure, will still be the third lowest harvest in the last 10 years.
In Russia, by the end of October, sunflowers had been harvested on 82% of the area, or 10 million hectares, from which 15.1 million tons had been threshed. Therefore, the harvest potential remains at the level of 16.5-17.5 million tons, compared to 16.5 million tons last year.
