Tamil Nadu: Former Minister slams government for not taking action to resume operations of sugar mill

Former Minister RB Udhayakumar criticized the Tamil Nadu government for not reopening the National Cooperative Sugar Mills in Mettupatti, Madurai. Speaking at an AIADMK protest, he emphasized the mill’s importance for local farmers and workers, arguing it should be valued for its community impact rather than just profitability. Udhayakumar urged the government to act on a committee’s recommendation to allocate Rs 27 crore for restarting the mill.

Madurai: The former Minister, RB Udhayakumar, on Tuesday asked the Tamil Nadu government to revive the National Cooperative Sugar Mills at Mettupatti in Madurai, reports DTNEXT. He slammed the DMK government for not taking action to resume operations of the sugar mill.

He contended that the sugar mill was once a source of livelihood for farmers and workers of the region.

Speaking to reporters during an AIADMK protest demanding the mill’s reopening, Udhayakumar said that the mill need not be evaluated based on profitability but on relevance to the community.

“Thousands of sugarcane farmers and hundreds of workers depend on this mill for their livelihood,” he said. “The government should not ignore their plight.”

The government-appointed committee had earlier recommended sanctioning Rs 27 crore to restart the mill’s operations. Udhayakumar asked the government to accept this recommendation and take necessary action to reopen the mill without delay.
