Tamil Nadu : ICAR emphasises importance of increasing sugarcane yield
The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, and Sakthi Sugars Limited organized a field day for 100 farmers in Mathur village, Anthiyur taluk. They showcased the high-yielding, drought-tolerant sugarcane variety Co 14012, expecting 50 tons per acre. Experts emphasized boosting productivity, with goals of 100 tons per acre. Farmers received seed materials and shared positive cultivation experiences. Agricultural officials and academics participated.
The ICAR – Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, along with Sakthi Sugars Limited, organised a field day for 100 farmers from across the district at a field in Mathur village in Anthiyur taluk on Tuesday.
The institute introduced a new variety, Co 14012, in 2022, which has successfully passed through various stages of trials and evaluations. A demonstration was held at the farm of T. Thirukumaran, where he cultivated the new variety on 1.5 hectares. The harvest is anticipated next month, with an expected average yield of 50 tons per acre.
D. Puthira Prathap, Principal Scientist and Head Extension, explained the research activities undertaken at the institute and the purpose of the meeting. V. Thiruvenkadam, vice president, Sakthi Sugars Limited, stressed the importance of increasing sugarcane yield to increase farmers’ income and emphasised the role of the institute in developing new sugarcane varieties.
P. Govindaraj, director of the institute, distributed seed materials of the new variety to the farmers. He reiterated the need for increased yield and insisted on aiming for a yield of 100 tons per acre. K. Mohanraj, Principal Scientist, provided a detailed explanation of the new variety highlighting that it was drought-tolerant, tall-growing, and non-flowering. Ashok Kumar, General Manager (Cane) at Sakthi Sugars Limited, discussed the field performance of this variety, while a local farmer shared his experiences cultivating it.
