Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko on Thursday met agriculture minister M R K Panneerselvam and finance minister Thangam Thenarasu seeking the withdrawal of the newly announced cess tax on maize. The MP said that the tax would adversely impact farmers in rain-fed regions across the state, particularly in the central and southern districts.Taking to X, Durai Vaiko flagged the plight faced by farmers due to wild boars and unpredictable rainfall. “With rising seed and fertilizer prices, maize cultivation has become costly for farmers. Now, this additional cess is forcing them to reduce the selling price of maize,” he said.”Apart from that, when maize is processed into cattle and poultry feed, it has to be sold at a higher price,” he added.

The MDMK general secretary said he had personally requested chief minister M K Stalin to remove the 1% cess. “I presented a request to chief minister M K Stalin, urging the withdrawal of the cess tax on maize and called on the Tamil Nadu govt to support the farmers who cultivate it.”Durai Vaiko said that both ministers accepted his request and assured to take the matter to the chief minister’s attention.
