The New Democratic Labour Front (NDLF) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to take over the privately managed sugar mill at Thirumandankudi, Thanjavur. The New Democratic Labour Front (NDLF) has urged the State government to take over the sugar mill that functioned under a private management at Thirumandankudi in Thanjavur district.
A demonstration in support of this demand was organised by NDLF in Thanjavur on August 16. The protesters raised slogans condemning the erstwhile private management of the mill for availing bank loans in the name of cane cultivators in collusion with the bank officials and urged the State government to waive the “illegally” availed loans and the loans availed by the cultivators in cooperative banks, along with interest, in addition to the main demand of acquisition of the factory by the State government.
Members from CPML Peoples’ Liberation, Leftists Common Platform, Tamil Nadu Cauvery Farmers Protection Association, Thamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, Thamizh Desa Makkal Munnani, Makkal Kalai Iyakiya Kazhagam, Makkal Adhikaram, and Marxist Periyarist Ambedkar Federation participated in the demonstration and extended their support to the NDLF’s demand of nationalisation of the sugar mill, which had been acquired by a Pudukottai-based distillery company through the National Company Law Tribunal proceedings.
