Tamil Nadu: Virudhunagar collector orders Dharani Sugars to clear pending dues to sugarcane farmers
Virudhunagar Collector N.O. Sukhaputra has directed Dharani Sugars to repay ₹2.61 crore in dues to sugarcane farmers by July 2025. The pending payments relate to the 2018–19 crushing season. The mill must present a repayment plan at the July 18 grievance meeting. Resuming crushing operations is contingent on clearing the arrears, prioritising farmer welfare.
Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu: Virudhunagar District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra has instructed Dharani Sugars and Chemicals Limited, based in Vasudevanallur, to settle pending dues amounting to Rs 2.61 crore to sugarcane farmers by July 2025. The directive was issued during a tripartite meeting held on July 14 at the Collectorate, where officials from the sugar mill, representatives of the farming community, and members of the Department of Agriculture were present, reported The Hindu.
The dues pertain to sugarcane supplied during the 2018–19 crushing season and are owed to farmers from Rajapalayam, Srivilliputtur, and Watrap taluks. The Collector emphasized that 240 farmers from Rajapalayam, 30 from Srivilliputtur, and 13 from Watrap were yet to receive their payments.
During the meeting, the Collector made it clear that the sugar mill must submit a report at the upcoming farmers’ grievance redressal meeting scheduled for July 18. The report should outline the factory’s plans for repayment and specify the course of action it will take if the dues remain unpaid. The Collector also warned that failure to make timely payments would prompt further action from the district administration.
In addition, the Collector urged the management of Dharani Sugars to resume its crushing operations only after clearing the outstanding arrears. He appealed to the factory to prioritise the interests of farmers and ensure that similar delays do not occur in future seasons.
