Target set for procurement of Rabi season wheat, rice and Shri grain

The central government has set Rabi procurement targets: 310 lakh tonnes of wheat, 70 lakh tonnes of rice, and 16 lakh tonnes of Shri grain for 2025. Punjab is expected to procure 125 lakh tonnes. To boost wheat procurement in key states, a ₹125 per quintal bonus may be offered in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

iGrain India – The central government has set procurement targets for Rabi season crops, which include 310 lakh tonnes of wheat, 70 lakh tonnes of rice, and 16 lakh tonnes of Shri grain for the 2025 marketing season.

The government has urged major producing states to take necessary precautions to ensure the maximum procurement of wheat, especially since wheat procurement in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat has historically been lower than expected.

The Union Agriculture Ministry plans to release production estimates for major Rabi crops in the next two weeks, which will provide a clearer picture of the situation. These estimates are expected to be more practical, considering all relevant factors.

An important meeting of the Food Secretaries of the states was held on February 28 under the chairmanship of the Union Food Secretary to discuss arrangements for the government procurement of Rabi crops.

The wheat procurement target for each state has been set based on feedback from the states, but details on state-wise targets, especially for wheat, have not yet been disclosed.

However, it is expected that Punjab will have the highest target, with a procurement goal of 125 lakh tonnes.

The Union Food Secretary has called for increased activism in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat to boost wheat procurement.

To incentivize procurement, there is a possibility of an additional bonus of Rs 125 per quintal above the minimum support price in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

However, concerns have arisen due to the high wholesale market price of wheat, which may affect procurement efforts.

As for rice and Shri Ann, the government expects no special difficulties in procurement. The main concern now is how weather conditions in the coming weeks will impact the wheat crop
