Telangana : BRS urges govt. to open maize procurement centres

BRS MLA V. Prashanth Reddy has urged the Telangana government to open maize procurement centres, paying farmers ₹2,800 per quintal (MSP ₹2,400 plus ₹400 bonus). He highlighted farmers’ losses of around ₹30,000 per acre due to low private market prices of ₹1,600–1,800 per quintal on 6.45 lakh acres of Kharif maize.
Former minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA V. Prashanth Reddy has requested the State Government to open procurement centres to buy maize from farmers at MSP and by paying a bonus of at least ₹400 per quintal.
Speaking to newspersons at Velpur in Nizamabad district on Thursday, he said the farmers were suffering loss of about ₹30,000 per acre in the absence of market intervention by the government by setting up procurement centres and the traders were exploiting the farmers by purchase the crop at ₹1,600 to ₹1,800 per quintal against the MSP of ₹2,400 per quintal.
He asked the government to procure maize at ₹2,800 per quintal including ₹400 per quintal bonus in addition to the MSP. He stated that the crop was raised in about 6.45 lakh acres during the Kharif season and in his Balkonda constituency 60% of harvesting was already completed and the private traders were exploiting farmers by purchasing the produce at a very low price.
As the farmers would get a yield of about 30 quintals per acre, they were losing ₹30,000 per acre since the traders were purchasing the produce at a maximum price of ₹1,800 per quintal.
