Lucknow: The UP government on Wednesday said the total sugarcane area in the state increased by about 8 lakh hectares, giving a yield of 9.93 ton per hectare and additional income of Rs 34,656 per hectare to farmers. This works out to a total of Rs. 9,887 crore on the total sugarcane area of 28.53 lakh hectares, a government spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said the government promoted rich and efficient agricultural practices which helped in increasing the farmers’ income. The BJP government has been highlighting its achievement of paying more than Rs. 2 lakh crores to the cane growers in the past 6 years of its rule in UP.

“Farmers get additional income of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 60,000 per hectare due to 15-20 % more yield and early ripening of sugarcane as compared to spring sowing of sugarcane,” the spokesperson said. He said that by sowing sugarcane through the trench method, the yield increases due to the increase in sugarcane’s accumulation and yield and intercropping farming becomes easier.

“Income levels increase by growing seasonal crops of vegetables, pulses, oilseeds and cereals, spices or flowers along with sugarcane,” he said. tnn
