TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM sign agreement for supply of sustainable aviation fuel
TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have signed a significant agreement for the supply of up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next decade. This deal is among Air France-KLM’s largest SAF purchases. The airline aims to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 30% by 2030, with at least 10% of its fuel sourced sustainably. The SAF will be produced from waste and residues at TotalEnergies’ facilities in Europe.
TotalEnergies and Air France-KLM have reached an agreement for the energy company to supply up to 1.5 million tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next decade. This contract represents one of the largest SAF purchases signed by Air France-KLM to date.
In both 2022 and 2023, Air France-KLM led the world in SAF usage, accounting for 17% and 16% of global production, respectively. The airline group aims to reduce its CO2 emissions per passenger kilometer by 30% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels. This goal will be achieved through fleet renewal, operational improvements like eco-piloting, and ensuring that at least 10% of fuel on all flights comes from more sustainable sources.
The SAF supplied to Air France-KLM will be derived from waste and residues in a circular economy model and produced at TotalEnergies’ biorefineries and refineries across France and Europe using a coprocessing method. This fuel will be used for flights departing from France, the Netherlands, and other European countries. Developing SAF is central to TotalEnergies’ strategy for transitioning to meet the aviation sector’s evolving demands.
