Toyota Motors has launched its popular MPV, the Innova Hycross. No they have not launched a facelift or upgraded the features list, but they have unveiled the Toyota Innova HyCross with flex-fuel engine that can run fully on alternative fuel ethanol. It is world’s first flex-fuel MPV launched in the presence of Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Mr. Nitin Gadkari.
Talking about the MPV, Toyota Innova Hycross will not just run on the alternate fuel but is even capable of generating electric power, making it able to run on EV mode as well. Ethanol is E100 graded fuel which is derived from Sugarcane & other vegetables and will work as an alternative fuel. The flex-fuel Innova Hycross will also have a lithium-ion battery pack that will generate enough power which will help the car to run purely on EV mode.
The car showcased today is a prototype and we have no confirmation when the production version will be launched.
The flex-fuel engine does not have the same components of the currently sold hybrid version of Innova Hycross. The engine has been tuned to run on E100 grade ethanol. They have used the lithium-ion battery which has self charging capabilities and will help the MPV to run on EV mode.
The introduction of ethanol based fuel is expected to reduce pollution to a great extent along with India’s carbon footprint. The Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, Mr. Nitin Gadkari has always been urging to use alternative fuels to reduce import of crude oil. Also, during the event, Mr. Gadkari said that vehicular pollution contributes to 40% of total pollution in India, with the residents of Delhi facing the impact the most.
Talking about the Toyota Innova Hycross, the MPV is based on the TNGA-C platform. It comes with a sole 2.0-litre petrol engine. With the strong hybrid setup, this engine is capable of producing 183bhp with an engine torque of 188Nm and a motor torque of 206Nm. We also have a 2.0-litre pure petrol setup capable of producing 172bhp and 205Nm of torque. CVT is the only transmission option doing duties for both engine options.
