U.S. ethanol capacity and production continue to grow

Ethanol production in the U.S. continues its upward trend, with capacity projected to reach 18.3 billion gallons in 2025, up from 17.7 billion in 2023, according to the Renewable Fuels Association. Dan O’Brien of Kansas State University noted that current capacity utilization stands at about 90%, reflecting strong industry performance and operational efficiency despite earlier concerns about pushing plants to their full “nameplate” limits.
The Renewable Fuels Association reports ethanol production in the United States continues to grow, with actual production climbing and capacity utilization at about 90 percent.
Dan O’Brien from Kansas State University has been digging into the numbers…tape“We’ve been growing in capacity for ethanol. In 2023, we ended up the year at about 17.7 billion gallons per year of capacity. 18.1 in 2024, now projected this year to be 18.3,” O’Brien said.
“The capacity that’s used, when you dig back behind those numbers, is about 90 percent. Again, during the early heady days of ethanol production, I remember hearing quite a bit of discussion about how, yes, we have our name plate, our boilerplate capacity, but we can’t push it to that or beyond.
“So, I’ve always been kind of surprised to see that, in the overall aggregate, that at least we’re showing about 90 percent of capacity with all plants thrown together.”
