UDSA: Corn use for fuel ethanol at 510 million bushels in October

In October 2024, corn use for fuel ethanol production increased by 3% from the previous month, totaling 460 million bushels, though slightly down from October 2023. Key by-products saw varied changes, with corn oil production rising to 198,165 tons, distillers dried grains up to 390,721 tons, and carbon dioxide captured reaching 263,744 tons.

The USDA recently released its Grain Crushings and Co-Products Production report for December, reporting that corn use for fuel ethanol production in October was up 3% when compared to the previous month.  

Total corn consumed for alcohol and other uses was 510 million bushels in October, up 3% when compared to September, but down slightly from October of last year. Usage included 92.3% for alcohol and 7.7% for other uses. 

Corn use for fuel ethanol production was at 460 million bushels, up 3% when compared to the previous month, but down slightly from October 2023. Corn consumed for dry milling fuel production and wet milling fuel production was 92.4% and 7.6%, respectively. 

At dry mills, condensed distillers solubles production was at 112,013 tons in October, up from 95,091 tons in September, but down from 114,333 tons in October of last year. Corn oil production increased to 198,165 tons, up from 184,442 tons the previous month and 189,026 tons in October 2023. Distillers dried grains production was at 390,721 tons, up from 365,238 tons in September, bur down from 402,622 tons during the same month of last year. Distillers dried grains with solubles production expanded to 1.87 million tons, up from both 1.8 million tons in September and 1.85 million tons in October 2023. Distillers wet grains production was at 1.31 million tons, up from 1.15 million tons the previous month, but down from 1.38 million tons in October of the previous year. Modified distillers wet grains production expanded to 429,103 tons, up from 372,632 tons the previous month and 425,030 tons in October 2023.

At wet mills, corn germ meal production reached 65,840 tons in October, up from 63,789 tons in September and 53,397 tons in October of last year. Corn gluten feed production fell to 251,577 tons, down from 273,303 tons the previous month and 265,908 tons in October 2023. Corn gluten meal production fell to 104,520 tons, down from 111,744 tons in September and 116,953 tons in October of the previous year. Wet corn gluten feed production was at 205,988 tons, up from 174,070 tons the previous month, but down from 212,424 tons in October 2023. 

At wet and dry mills, carbon dioxide captured reached 263,744 tons in October, up from both 245,884 tons in September and 223,201 tons in October 2023.
