Ukraine can produce up to 10 billion cubic meters of biogas per annum: Minister

Ukraine could produce up to 10 billion cubic meters of biogas annually, provided substantial investments of over $20 billion are made, said Taras Vysotskyi, Acting Minister of Agrarian Policy. Utilizing waste like manure and straw, this effort aims to bolster energy security for both Ukraine and Europe. Vysotskyi emphasized the growing global demand for bioethanol, biogas, and agricultural byproducts, marking a significant opportunity for Ukrainian-European collaboration.

Ukraine has the potential to produce up to 10 billion cubic meters of biogas annually, contingent upon significant multibillion-dollar investments. This statement was conveyed by Taras Vysotskyi, Acting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, in an interview with Ukrinform.

Vysotskyi emphasized that the production of bioethanol and biogas stands as a crucial sector in agricultural processing, presenting a promising avenue for effective cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union.

“In Ukraine, utilizing available waste such as manure, straw, and food scraps, there is potential to generate up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually. By developing this resource for domestic use, we can enhance both Ukraine’s and Europe’s energy security. However, this would necessitate a substantial initial investment, estimated at USD 20 billion or more,” Vysotskyi remarked.

Furthermore, global demand for amino acids, yeast, and various vegetable proteins is experiencing robust annual growth rates of 3-5%. The market demand surpasses current supply levels. By focusing on this sector, Ukraine aims not to displace its European counterparts but rather to meet global demand effectively.
