UNICA: Corn ethanol production continues to expand in late July

UNICA reports south-central Brazil’s sugarcane ethanol output fell in late July due to dry growing conditions, wet harvest delays, and a 10-year low ATR. Mills produced 2.28 billion liters, down sharply, while corn ethanol rose 13.83% to 392 million liters. Overall ethanol production since April dropped nearly 12%, with sales slightly lower.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has released data showing ethanol sugarcane ethanol production was down during the second half of July. Corn ethanol production was up when compared to the same period of last year.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 50.22 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of July, down 2.66% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the harvest season, which began April 1, reached 334.95 million metric tons, down 8.57% when compared to the same period of last year.

Sugarcane ethanol production has been impacted by both lower sugarcane processing volumes and lower levels of total recoverable sugars (TRS) within the feedstock. According to UNCIA, dry weather impacted sugarcane during the growing season, while wet weather has impacted harvest activities. ATR was only 139.62 kilograms per ton during the second half of July, down 5.21% when compared to the same period of last year. ATR since the beginning of the current harvest season is down 4.77%, falling to a 10-year low.

Mills in the region produced 2.28 billion liters (602.31 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of July. Production included 1.4 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 13.54%, and 880.4 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 6.57%. Corn ethanol accounted for 392.43 million liters, or 17.21% of total production, during the two-week period, up 13.83%.

Since the beginning of the current harvest season, ethanol production has reached 13.88 billion liters, down 11.96%. Production included 8.84 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 11.85%, and 5.05 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 12.15%. Corn ethanol accounted for 2.95 billion liters of production.

Mills in the south-central region sold 2.93 billion liters of ethanol in July. Domestic sales included 1.75 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.58%, and 1.07 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.02%.

Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 11.48 billion liters, down 2.73%. Sales included 7.32 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.2%, and 4.16 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 1.96%.
