UNICA: Ethanol Production And Sales Up In Late April
Brazil’s sugarcane industry experienced a surge in processing and ethanol production in the second half of April, as reported by UNICA. Sugarcane processing in the south-central region rose to 34.58 million metric tons, with ethanol production reaching 1.51 billion liters. Domestic sales soared to 2.76 billion liters, while exports dipped to 90.29 million liters. Corn ethanol production also saw a significant uptick, contributing to the industry’s growth.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing was up during the second half of April. Ethanol production from both sugarcane and corn feedstocks was also up during the two-week period.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 34.58 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of April, up from 21.43 million metric tons processed during the same period of last year. Sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 50.31 million metric tons, up 43.41% when compared to the same period of last year.
Mills in the region produced 1.51 billion liters (398.9 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of April, up 51.86% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 1.08 billion gallons of hydrous ethanol, up 66.56%, and 436.38 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 24.66%. Corn ethanol accounted for 298.61 million liters, or 20% of production, up 51.06% when compared to the same period of 2023.
Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 2.36 billion liters, up 32.42%. That volume includes 1.78 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 55.05%, and 584.06 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 8.27%. Corn ethanol production was at 569.11 million liters, up 30.18% when compared to the same period of last year.
Mills in the south-central region sold 2.85 billion liters of ethanol in April, up 35.75% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales included 1.86 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 56.65%, and 927.59 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 6.32%.
Domestic sales of ethanol were at 2.76 billion liters in April, up 39.92% when compared to the same period of last year. Domestic sales of hydrous ethanol reached 1.86 billion liters, up 63.42%, with domestics sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 902.48 million liters, up 7.95%.
According to UNICA, 90.29 million liters of ethanol was destined for export in April, down 29.01% when compared to the same period of last year. That volume includes 65.18 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 28.18%, and 25.11 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 31.06%.
