UNICA: Ethanol Production, Sales Continue To Trend Higher In Late May

UNICA reported a slight dip in sugarcane processing in Brazil’s south-central region for the latter half of May, processing 45.19 million metric tons, down 3.36% from last year. However, ethanol production remained robust with 2.12 billion liters produced, including 1.28 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 6.49%, and 837.67 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 8.95%. Corn ethanol production rose significantly to 338.15 million liters, comprising 16% of total output.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing dipped slightly during the second half of May. Ethanol production and sales, however, continued to trend above last year. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 45.19 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of May, down 3.36% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest period, which began April 1, reached 140.74 million metric tons, up 11.15% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. 

Mills in the region produced 2.12 billion liters (560.04 million gallons) of ethanol during the second half of May. Production included 1.28 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 6.49%, and 837.67 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 8.95%. Corn ethanol accounted for 338.15 million liters, or 16% of total production, up 50.38% when compared to the same period of 2023. 

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 6.46 billion liters, up 10.42%. Production included 4.32 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 24.97%, and 2.14 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 10.59%. Corn ethanol production was at 1.2 billion liters, up 28.83%. 

Mills in the south-central region sold 2.97 billion liters of ethanol in May, up 22.51% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales of hydrous ethanol reached 1.93 billion liters, up 46.8%, while sales of anhydrous ethanol were at 1.03 billion liters, down 6.36%. Domestic sales included 1.87 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 46.47%, and 997.35 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 4.16%. 

Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 5.81 billion liters, up 28.57%. Sales included 3.86 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 51.64%, and 1.96 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 1.1%.
