UNICA: Ethanol production, sales down in late June

Brazil’s sugarcane mills processed 42.71 million tons in late June, down nearly 13% from last year, according to UNICA. Ethanol output also dropped, though corn ethanol rose over 22%, reaching 373.62 million liters. Total ethanol sales for June fell 3.58%, with domestic hydrous ethanol demand declining over 6%.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has released data showing sugarcane milling during the second half of June was down when compared to last year. Total ethanol production was also down, but corn ethanol production continued to grow.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 42.71 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of June, down 12.86% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the start of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 206.2 million metric tons, down 14.06% when compared to the same period of last year.
Mills in the region produced 1.92 billion liters (507.21 million gallons) of ethanol in June. Production included 1.17 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 17.7%, and 742.96 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 17%. Corn ethanol accounted for 373.62 million liters, or 19.49% of total production during the two-week period, up 22.57%.
Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 9.43 billion liters, down 14.81%. Production included 6.12 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 13.84%, and 3.31 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 16.55%. Corn ethanol accounted for 2.18 billion liters of production, up 22.12%.
Mills in the south-central region sold 2.8 billion liters of ethanol in June, down 3.58% when compared to the same month of last year. Sales included 1.02 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 1.68%, and 1.78 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 4.63%.
Domestic sales included 1.71 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 6.23%, and 981.64 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 0.72%.
Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 8.56 billion liters, down 2.59%. That volume include 5.49 billion liters of hydrous ethanol and 3.07 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol.
