UNICA: Ethanol production up in late December

UNICA reported a sharp rise in Brazil’s ethanol output in late December, with higher cane crushing and strong gains in hydrous and anhydrous ethanol. However, cumulative ethanol production and sales for the 2025/26 season remain lower year on year, despite growth in corn-based ethanol.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced ethanol production was up significantly during the second half of December. Ethanol sales for the full month were downs slightly when compared to the same period of 2024.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 2.17 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of December, up from 1.71 million metric tons processed during the same period of 2024. 

Sugarcane cane processing since the start of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2025, reached 600.4 million metric tons, down 2.28% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. 

Mills in the region produced 560.89 million liters (148.17 million gallons) during the second half of December. Production included 327.66 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 7.23%, and 233.24 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 27.76%. Corn ethanol accounted for 77.23% of production during the two-week period. 

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 30.84 billion liters, down 5.06% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. Production included 19.05 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 7.94%, and 11.78 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, unchanged when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. Corn ethanol accounted for 6.86 billion liters of production, up 13.98%. 

Mills in the south-central region sold 2.97 billion liters of ethanol in December. Sales included 1.15 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 7.64%, and 1.82 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 2.79%. 

Domestic sales included 1.74 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 1.91%, and 1.14  billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 10.52%. 

Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 26.29 billion liters, down 2.03%. Sales included 16.35 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.75%, and 9.94 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 4.75%.
