UNICA: Ethanol sales trend higher in early December
UNICA reported higher ethanol sales in early December despite lower sugarcane crushing and ethanol output in Brazil’s Center-South. Harvest-to-date cane processing and ethanol production remain below last year, though anhydrous and corn ethanol output showed gains, supporting sales volumes amid tighter overall supply.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced ethanol sales were up during the first half of December. Total sugarcane processing and ethanol production during the current harvest season continues to trend lower than the previous year.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 5.92 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of December, down when compared to the 8.81 million metric tons processed during the same period of 2024.
Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, 2025, reached 598.19 million metric tons, down 2.36% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season.
Mills in the region produced 740.61 million liters (195.65 million gallons) of ethanol during the first half of December, including 393.59 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 20.62%, and 347.02 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 30.18%. Corn ethanol accounted for 400.96 million liters, or 54.14% of total production during the two-week period, up 6.08% when compared to the same period of 2024.
Total ethanol production since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 30.27 billion liters, down 5.37% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. Production included 18.72 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 8.17%, and 11.55 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 0.43%. Corn ethanol accounted for 6.43 billion liters of production, up 14.49%.
Mills in south-central region solid 1.53 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of December. Sales included 582.49 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 18.03%, and 943.22 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 8.18%.
Domestic sales for the two-week period included 582.49 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 18.33%, and 893.96 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.53%.
Total sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 24.85 billion liters, down 1.64%. Sales included 15.47 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 5.34%, and 9.37 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 5.14%.
