UNICA: Sugarcane processing, corn ethanol production up in early April


UNICA reports a 2.99% rise in sugarcane processing and an 11.54% boost in ethanol output in Brazil’s first half of April. Corn ethanol surged 41.3%, accounting for 39% of total ethanol production. Despite strong output, domestic ethanol sales dipped 3.5%, and exports dropped over 52%, reflecting shifting market dynamics early in the 2025–’26 harvest season.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has released data showing sugarcane processing was up slightly during the first half of April. Total ethanol production was up nearly 12%, and corn ethanol production was up more than 41%.
Brazil’s 2025-’26 sugarcane harvest season kicked off April 1. According to UNICA, mills in the south-central region of the country processed 16.59 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first two weeks of the new harvest season, up 2.99% when compared to the same period of last year.
Ethanol production reached 918.14 million liters (242.55 million gallons) during the first half of April, up 11.54% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 739.02 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 8.92%, and 179.12 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 23.84%.
Corn ethanol accounted for 258.03 million liters, or 39% of total production during the two-week period, up 41.3% when compared to the same period of 2025.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil sold 1.38 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of April. Domestic sales included 890.07 million liters, down 3.5% when compared to the same period of last year, and 464.6 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 3.7%. Exports reached 24.49 million liters during the two-week period, down 52.19%. Exports included 6.84 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 86.6%, and 17.65 million liters of anhydrous ethanol.
