UNICA: Sugarcane processing, ethanol production down in early May

UNICA data shows Brazil’s sugarcane processing and ethanol production fell in early May, with sugarcane down 6.09% and ethanol down 15.39%. Hydrous and anhydrous ethanol output declined, while corn ethanol rose 21.38%. Ethanol sales dropped 5.13%, with hydrous down and anhydrous slightly up. Corn ethanol surged 27.79% since the harvest began in April.
UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has released data showing sugarcane processing and total ethanol production were both down during the first half of May. Corn ethanol production continued to trend higher.
Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 42.32 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of May, down 6.09% when compared to the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 76.71 million metric tons, down 20.24% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season.
Mills in the region produced 1.78 billion liters (470.23 million gallons) of ethanol during the first half of May. Production included 1.16 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 8.11%, and 616.78 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 16.72%. Corn ethanol accounted for 359.9 million liters, or 20.23% of total production, up 21.38% when compared to the same period of last year.
Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 3.68 billion liters, down 15.39%. Production included 2.6 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 14.72%, and 1.08 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 16.98%. Corn ethanol accounted for 1.08 billion liters of production, up 27.79% when compared to the same period of last year.
Mills in the region sold 1.35 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of May, down 5.13% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales included 491.52 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 3.94%, and 848.91 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 9.69%.
Domestic sales for the first half of May included 828.22 million liters, down 10.37%, and 483.31 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 2.21%.
Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 4.11 billion liters, down 4.01% Sales included 2.68 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 7.48%, and 1.44 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 3.19%.
