UP government prioritising modernisation and expansion of sugar mills in state

The Yogi Adityanath-led government is investing over ₹170 crore in modernizing sugar mills in Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar. The upgrades aim to increase crushing capacity from 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes per day, allowing mills to handle up to 5.40 lakh tonnes of sugarcane in five years. This will improve energy use, reduce fuel consumption, and boost sugar production.

In a major move, the State Government under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath has given an edge to the sugarcane industry in its decision for modernisation and expansion of this sector in the State, reports International Business Times.

The state government has drawn renovation plans for sugar mills in Baghpat and Muzaffarnagar to enhance their production capacity and productivity.

In a high-level meeting on Saturday, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh discussed the proposal brought before him by the government to invest Rs 84.77 crore in the modernization and expansion of the Kisan Sahkari Sugar Mill in Baghpat. It said the proposed project would increase the mill’s crushing capacity from 2,500 to 3,000 tonnes of cane per day (TCD). The funding will be split equally, with 50 per cent coming from the state government and the other 50 per cent as a loan.

The government has set aside Rs 65 crore in the 2024-25 budget for this project. Officials say the upgrade is needed to handle the growing supply of sugarcane in the mill’s surrounding areas. The mill is expected to crush 5.01 lakh tonnes of cane in the next five years, up from 4.82 lakh tonnes currently.

This was followed by a similar proposal for the Ganga Kisan Sahkari Sugar Mill, Morna, Muzaffarnagar, which would entail an estimated investment of Rs 88.02 crore. The crushing capacity of this mill too would be enhanced from 2,500 TCD to 3,000 TCD.

Presently, modernization is focused on increasing the crushing capacity of the mills, so that in the next five years, they can crush as much as 5.40 lakh tonnes of sugarcane as compared to the present 4.85 lakh tonnes.

It would have several advantages: better utilization of energy resources, crushing the sugarcane in time and saving fuel, besides improving the production of sugar.
