UP Govt Enforces Zero-Tolerance Policy On Sugarcane Trade Violation, Seizes Over 3,000 Quintal


Widespread irregularities, including underweighing and illegal sugarcane trade, were uncovered at purchase centers during the 2024-25 crushing season. Authorities issued 31 notices, lodged 14 FIRs, suspended 40 weighment clerks’ licenses, and revoked 11. Over 3,073 quintals of illegal cane worth Rs 11.26 lakh were seized. Commissioner Pramod Kumar Upadhyay vowed strict, zero-tolerance action to protect farmers’ interests.
Several irregularities, including underweighing and illegal sugarcane trade, were discovered at sugarcane purchase centers during the 2024-25 crushing season. Notices have been issued in 31 serious cases, with one leading to an FIR. The licenses of 40 weighment clerks have been suspended, and 11 licenses have been revoked.
Commissioner of Cane and Sugar, Pramod Kumar Upadhyay, stated that 16,203 sugarcane purchase centers have been inspected so far. An FIR has been filed in Gadaura, Gorakhpur, against those caught weighing.
FIRs have also been lodged against sugar mills in Lakhimpur Kheri, Bareilly, Uttarakhand, and Moradabad for illegal sugarcane trade. During inspections of sugar mill gates and external purchase centers in the 2024-25 crushing season, notices were issued in 31 serious cases.
This resulted in the suspension of licenses for 40 weighment clerks and the revocation of 11 licenses. A total of 3073.91 quintals of illegal sugarcane, valued at Rs 11.26 lakh, has been seized across the state, leading to 14 FIRs against those involved in the trade.
District magistrates have initiated bail forfeiture proceedings in 23 serious and 389 general cases, and lawsuits have been filed against the accused in three cases. The Commissioner emphasised a zero-tolerance policy against actions harming sugarcane farmers, promising strict action against any personnel or officials found involved.
