UP govt targets major growth in sugar sector to boost economy

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh aims to boost its sugar sector’s Gross Value Output from ₹1.32 lakh crore to ₹1.62 lakh crore in three years, supporting the state’s $1 trillion economy goal. Plans include increasing sugarcane and jaggery production, raising recovery rates, and expanding storage. Over ₹2.80 lakh crore in sugarcane dues have been paid, benefiting 46.5 lakh farmers directly.

Lucknow: The sugar industry is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving Chief Minister ‘s ambitious vision of transforming Uttar Pradesh into a onetrillion-dollor economy, with the state govt setting a target to raise the sector’s Gross Value Output (GVO) from the current Rs 1.32 lakh crore to over Rs 1.62 lakh crore
within the next three years.

According to the sugar industry and sugarcane development department, the GVO has shown consistent growth in recent years—from Rs 1,24,198 crore in the financial year 2023–24 to Rs 1,32,024 crore in FY 2024–25. The department aims to increase sugarcane production by 7% and jaggery production by 10% by 2027–28, compared to current levels.

A comprehensive action plan has been prepared for the current financial year to achieve these targets. Key initiatives include increasing the sugar recovery rate from 9.56% to 10.50%, ensuring the timely sale of 91.54 lakh quintals, and expanding storage capacity.

In recent years, the Yogi govt has significantly improved the lives of sugarcane farmers, reaching out to 65 lakh registered farmers, of whom 46.5 lakh have directly received govt benefits. A total of Rs 2.80 lakh crore has recently been disbursed as sugarcane dues, which is expected to substantially improve the financial well-being of farmers.
