UP launches master trainer network to boost scientific sugarcane farming

To fight red rot disease and modernize sugarcane farming, the UP sugarcane administration is training master trainers. Selected from farmers, mill workers, and officials, they’ll educate growers on disease-resistant varieties, pest control, irrigation, and multi-cropping. The initiative targets 152 council areas, aiming to improve sugar yield, recovery rates, and farmers’ income through expert-led, village-level sessions.

PILIBHIT: In a bid to modernise sugarcane cultivation and tackle the red rot disease that severely impacted crops—reducing both sugar production and recovery rates during the current crushing season—the UP sugarcane administration has launched a new initiative to train a network of master trainers.Under the initiative, progressive farmers and skilled workers from sugar mills and the sugarcane department will be selected for expert training. Once trained, these individuals will serve as master trainers, educating sugarcane growers across 152 sugarcane development council areas at the village panchayat level.Cane commissioner Prabhu N. Singh told TOI that selected candidates will undergo a three-day intensive training conducted by scientists from the UP council of sugarcane research. The programme will cover high-yielding and disease-resistant varieties, pest and disease management, seed and soil treatment, drip irrigation, multi-cropping, input optimisation, and government subsidy schemes.”Balanced input application, water efficient irrigation, and multi-cropping with pulses, potato, and pea can significantly boost farmers’ income and overall agricultural output in the state,” Singh said.

Each master trainer will train groups of 50 farmers. Training sessions will be held over six months at sugarcane research institutes, Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), and progressive farmers’ fields, under the supervision of departmental officials. A district-wise training schedule has already been issued.
