UP leads in average sugar recovery in ongoing season

UP has recorded a strong 9.5% sugar recovery this season, surpassing last year and the national average. Higher-yield varieties, better farm practices, and healthy crop conditions boosted sucrose levels. Sugar output rose to 105 LMT, supported by efficient mill operations, improving revenues and farmers’ payment capacity despite fewer mills than Maharashtra.

Lucknow: Here is a sweetener at the start of the New Year. UP emerged as a leading state in terms of average sugar recovery in the ongoing cane-crushing season, potentially putting up fierce competition before Maharashtra, the biggest sugar-producing state in the country.UP registered a sugar recovery of 9.5%, which was significantly more than last year’s 8.9% and the current national average of 8.67%. UP was followed by Telangana (9%) and Bihar (8.75%). Maharashtra saw a sugar recovery of 8.25%, even though the state continued to be the leading producer of sugar. The high sugar recovery in UP, experts said, underscored the use of high-yielding varieties and better adoption of agronomic practices, eventually increasing sucrose accumulation.Recent data showed that sugar production in UP already increased from 92.75 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) in 2024-25 to 105 LMT in the current season. This was expected to increase significantly in the coming two months when cane crushing would be stepped up. UP emerged as the leading producer of sugar, surpassing Maharashtra last year.Maharashtra, this time, however, witnessed a surge in sugar production, going up from 80.95 LMT in 2024-25 to 110 LMT this season.

As a matter of fact, UP had 120 mills in operation, which was significantly fewer than Maharashtra, where 190 mills crushed cane. The actual cane crushed in UP in the ongoing season touched the mark of 263.68 LMT, which was more than 257.87 LMT, recorded in the current period during 2024-25. Higher recovery, experts said, directly translated to more sugar per tonne of cane. This would lead to higher revenue earnings for mills and better paying capacity towards farmers. Sources in the sugar industry said that many mills operated at high crushing capacities consistently through the ongoing season, boosting efficiency and recovery metrics.Unlike some regions where erratic weather conditions hurt cane quality (disease, floods etc), many UP regions managed to maintain decent crop health, resulting in better juice quality and extraction.
