Hapur, Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills in Hapur are likely to start operations by the end of October or the first week of November. Farmers are showing a strong preference for sugarcane cultivation, with the area under cane increasing by around 551 hectares this year, according to the latest sugarcane survey. After four years of declining acreage, the rise has brought relief to the district’s sugarcane department.

Last year, sugar mills closed earlier than usual, and the Co-0238 variety, which occupies the largest area, suffered a disease outbreak, leading to reduced production.

This year, farmers have replaced Co-0238 with new varieties. While the disease still affects Co-0238, especially after the recent rains, overall farmer interest in sugarcane has increased.

Meanwhile, a large number of private crushers in Hapur and surrounding districts are preparing to start operations immediately after the Shradh period. These crushers purchase sugarcane from farmers for cash, with prices already being fixed in advance. Farmers plan to supply large quantities of cane to the crushers to ensure fields are cleared in time for wheat sowing.

The sugarcane survey in the district has been completed, showing a total cane cultivation area of 39,847 hectares this year, said BK Patel, District Cane Officer, reported Amar Ujala.
