UP: Sugarcane Development Committee To Handle Farmer Payments Instead Of Banks, Rs 90 Lakh Approved For New Office In Bhira

The Cooperative Sugarcane Development Committee’s AGM proposed direct sugarcane payments to farmers through the committee instead of banks, pending approval. Held in Bhira, Lakhimpur, the meeting sanctioned Rs 90 lakh for a new council office. Additional projects worth Rs 5 crore were approved. Complaints about extortion at Gularia Sugar Mill were addressed, with warnings issued.

In a significant decision made during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Cooperative Sugarcane Development Committee, it was proposed that sugarcane payments to farmers would be handled directly by the Sugarcane Development Committee instead of banks. Several proposals were passed in this regard and submitted to the Sugarcane Commissioner for approval in Uttar Pradesh.

The AGM, held on March 22 at the Bhira, Lakhimpur district office under the chairmanship of Dr Rakesh Kumar Singh, also approved the establishment of a Sugarcane Development Council office at the Sugarcane Development Office to address farmer concerns related to sugarcane surveys, betting calendars, and other issues. An allocation of Rs 90 lakh has been sanctioned for this initiative.

Providing details of the meeting, Secretary Rajesh Kumar Verma stated that due to the ongoing challenges with sugarcane payments through banks, the Cane Commissioner had sought a proposal for direct payment through the Sugarcane Committee, which has now been approved and forwarded.

Additionally, the committee approved the construction of a waiting room for farmers, repairs for fertiliser godowns in Gularia Bhanpur and Bijua, and arrangements for fertiliser distribution near villages. A total budget of over Rs 5 crore has been allocated for these initiatives.

During the meeting, several farmers raised concerns over extortion by employees of Gularia Sugar Mill in the name of loading and unloading charges. The matter was strongly opposed, and the General Manager of Gularia Sugar Mill was instructed to put an end to such practices, with a warning of strict action upon further complaints.

Key attendees included Palia Sugarcane Development Committee Chairman Abhishek Awasthi, Mandal Chairman Sharda Mandal Shashi Shankar Shukla, Dhirendra Singh, Mokam Singh, Virendra Dixit, Awadhesh Mishra, Anil Dixit, Awadhesh Kumar, Izhar Khan, Ramakant Parvinder Singh, among others, who raised various sugarcane-related concerns.
