USDA: PH biofuel use to increase with stricter blending guidelines

The USDA projects an 8% increase in the Philippines’ fuel ethanol demand to 682 million liters and a 0.8% rise in biodiesel to 240 million liters. Ethanol production is expected to reach 395 million liters. The DOE plans to increase ethanol in gasoline from 10% to 20%, pending certain conditions. Stricter blending regulations could further boost biofuel consumption. The DOE may issue guidelines for a 3% biodiesel blend and 20% ethanol mix.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) says that the Philippines’ expected increase in fuel reserves and the impending implementation of stricter blending guidelines will lead to a spike in biofuel consumption this year.

In a report by the Manila Bulletin, USDA said in its projection that the fuel ethanol demand in the country would soar by 682 million liters or 8%. Meanwhile, biodiesel is expected to see a modest increase of 0.8%, rising to 240 million liters from the anticipated 230 million liters in 2023.

Furthermore, ethanol production is expected to increase to 395 million liters, compared to last year’s prediction of 375 million liters.

The Department of Energy (DOE) declared in January 2023 that it was gearing up to increase the percentage of ethanol in gasoline products from 10% to 20% of volume, provided certain requirements were met.

The USDA further pointed out that the fuel pool’s expansion would demonstrate the possibility for even greater growth if stricter blending regulations are completely implemented, in addition to supporting the expected rebound of biofuel consumption.

The USDA also mentioned that the DOE would still need to decide whether to issue a circular outlining the essential standards for the roll-out of the 3% biodiesel (B3 blend) and the 20% ethanol for gasoline or the E20 mix.
