USDA: Planned corn acres up 5%, sorghum acres up 4% in 2025

​U.S. farmers intend to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2025, a 5% increase from 2024, according to the USDA’s Prospective Plantings report. This rise is expected in 40 of 48 states, with Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota anticipating significant gains. Conversely, soybean acreage is projected at 83.5 million acres, down 4% from last year.

U.S. agricultural producers are expected to plant 95.3 million acres of corn in 2025, up 5% or 4.73 million acres when compared to last year, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s annual Prospective Plantings report, released March 31. 

When compared to 2024, corn planted acreage is expected to be up or unchanged in 40 of the 48 estimating states. Acreage increases of 400,000 acres or more from last year are expected in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota. If realized, the planted area of corn in Idaho, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon and South Dakota will be the largest on record.

Sorghum planted acres are also expected to increase this year, reaching 6.6 million acres, up 4% when compared to 2024.

The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official, survey-based estimates of U.S farmers 2025 planting intentions. NASS’s acreage estimates are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of nearly 74,000 farm operators across the country.

The USDA also released its quarterly Grain Stocks report on March 31, indicating that corn stocks as of March 1 were at 8.15 billion bushels, down 2% when compared to the same time last year. On-farm corn stocks were at 4.5 billion bushels, down 11%, while off-farm stocks were at 3.65 million bushels, up 12%. The December 2024 – February 2025 indicated disappearance is 3.92 billion bushels, compared with 3.82 million bushels during the same period of last year. 

Grain sorghum stocks as of March 1 totaled 150 million bushels, up 42% when compared to the same time last year. On farm stocks were at 14.9 million bushels, up 35%, while off-farm stocks were at 135 million bushels, up 43%. The December2024 – February 2025 indicated disappearance from all positions is 62.2 million bushels, 26% below the same period of last year.
