USDA: Planted Corn Acreage Down 3% From Last Year
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) projects that U.S. corn planting for 2024 will cover 91.5 million acres, a 3% decrease from last year. This marks the eighth highest planted acreage since 1944. Corn planting is down or unchanged in 32 out of 48 states, with 83.4 million acres expected for grain harvest, a 4% drop from 2023. The survey revealed 94% of corn planted is biotech, up from 93% last year.
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service estimates that 91.5 million acres of corn will be planted in the U.S. for 2024, down 3% or 3.17 million acres when compared to last year, according to the agency’s annual Acreage report, which was released June 28. This represents the eighth highest planted acreage in the U.S. since 1944.
When compared to last year, planted acreage is expected to be down or unchanged in 32 of the 48 estimating states. Area harvested for grain, at 83.4 million acres, is down 4% from 2023.
The estimate is based on a survey of approximately 9,000 segments of land and nearly 64,000 farm operators during the first two weeks of June. The survey also showed that 94% of all corn acres planted in the U.S. this year are biotech varieties, up from 93% last year.
The survey-based estimate for planted corn acreage is up significantly when compared to the 90 million acres of planted corn predicted by NASS in its annual Prospective Plantings report, which was released March 28. If realized, the predicted planted acreage would have represented a 5% decline from 2023.
