Uttar Pradesh: Around 85 per cent of cane dues cleared so far, says Agriculture Minister
Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said sugar mills have cleared about 85% of farmers’ cane payments, totaling ₹29,903 crore out of ₹34,892 crore as of May 25. At a Kharif productivity workshop in Bareilly, he highlighted improved sugarcane yields, rising from under 600 to nearly 828 quintals per hectare. The state has 121 active sugar mills, including 10 recently revived, with plans for a new mill in Bareilly.
Bareilly: Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi said that the sugar mills in the state have cleared around 85 per cent of the cane bills of the farmers. He was speaking at a joint Kharif productivity workshop for the Bareilly and Moradabad divisions that was held on Monday at the auditorium of the Government Inter College in Bareilly.
He stated that as of 25th May, out of the ₹34,892 crore cane payment, ₹29,903 crore has been cleared, which is around 85 percent.
During the event, the minister also shared several key updates related to agricultural progress in the region.
The efforts are underway to establish a new sugar mill in Bareilly, he said. To provide farmers with information about various government schemes and services, multiple stalls were set up by different departments at the venue. Minister Shahi, along with Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Ravindra Kumar, visited and inspected these stalls during the event.
Shahi noted a marked improvement in the output of sugarcane. “Earlier, sugarcane yield was less than 600 quintals per hectare, but now it has increased to nearly 828 quintals per hectare,” he said.
He also informed the audience that 121 sugar mills are currently active in the state, with 10 of them having been revived recently, signaling ongoing efforts to boost the agricultural sector in Uttar Pradesh.
