Uttar Pradesh: Chhata sugar mill and Pipraich ethanol projects to provide major boost to farmers

The Uttar Pradesh government is reviving Mathura’s Chhata sugar mill and setting up a 120 KPLD ethanol distillery in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich. The Mathura unit’s capacity will expand from 2,000 to 4,900 tonnes daily, benefiting farmers. With Rs 2.80 lakh crore paid to sugarcane farmers in eight years, the sector remains crucial to the state’s economy.

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh: In a major boost for sugarcane farmers, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an initiative to restart production at the Chhata sugar mill in Mathura district and establish a new ethanol distillery in Gorakhpur’s Pipraich area.

According to a government spokesperson, both projects have been initiated by state govt agencies and departments, inviting private participation to operationalise the Mathura unit, which had been shut down since 2009. The upgraded infrastructure will expand the mill’s daily crushing capacity from 2,000 tonnes to 4,900 tonnes.

“This is great news for local farmers. The increased capacity means more sugarcane can be processed, which will directly improve our earnings,” said Satyaveer Singh, a farmer from Kosi Kalan village.

In addition, a 120 KPLD ethanol distillery will be set up at the Pipraich sugar mill in Gorakhpur with an investment of Rs 90 crore. Construction will begin once the responsible agency is selected.

The government has also prioritized timely payments to sugarcane farmers. Over the past eight years, a record Rs 2.80 lakh crore has been distributed to farmers, a significant increase compared to Rs 66.70 crore paid between 1995 and 2017 under previous administrations. For the 2025-26 financial year, the government has approved Rs 475 crore for farmer payments.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has consistently highlighted the importance of sugarcane farming to the state’s economy. Currently, the sugarcane sector contributes Rs 1.09 lakh crore to Uttar Pradesh’s Gross Value Added (GVA), reinforcing its vital role in economic growth and farmer welfare.
