Uttar Pradesh: Farmers demand hike in sugarcane purchase price
Bhagat Singh Verma, the national president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Verma), has demanded that the government raise the purchase price of sugarcane to Rs 700 per quintal due to increasing production costs ¹. This demand comes after the Uttar Pradesh government raised the state advised price (SAP) of sugarcane by Rs 20 per quintal to Rs 370 for early-sown varieties in the 2023-24 season ². However, farmers in western UP termed this hike as “inadequate” and are demanding a higher price ².
Saharanpur: Bhagat Singh Verma, the national president of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Verma), demanded the government to hike purchase price for sugarcane, reports Live Hindustan.
Addressing a gathering in Jhabeeran, Verma called for the sugarcane purchase price to be raised to Rs 700 per quintal, citing rising production costs. It deplores that if the government can’t even ensure the farmers of this country receive at least a break-even cost of production, how can it assure a profitable price?
Dr. Ashok Malik, national spokesperson of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Verma) was also present on the occasion. He expressed concern that the government is failing to ensure even the basic cost of production for the country’s farmers, let alone a profitable price.
