Uttarakhand: Maize demand set to grow as ethanol production expands in India
Indian Council of Agricultural Research says India currently uses 10–12 million tonnes of maize for ethanol production, with demand expected to rise under the government’s biofuel push. Officials say maize output may exceed 50 million tonnes in 2025–26, as ethanol demand and global supply disruptions support higher domestic consumption.
India currently uses around 10 to 12 million tonnes of maize for ethanol production, and this demand is expected to increase further, said Dr Ramniwas from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
He was speaking at a maize field day organised in Ghusri village to encourage higher production as demand rises from the ethanol sector. More than 100 farmers took part in the programme held on Monday.
During the event, Dr Manish Kakaraliya guided farmers on better cultivation practices, including the proper use of fertilisers and irrigation methods. He also advised against storing maize in heaps and stressed the importance of using natural or artificial drying techniques to maintain crop quality.
Project manager Dr SL Jat said that the central government’s ethanol policy is driving higher demand for maize. He added that the country’s maize production is likely to exceed 50 million tonnes in 2025–26.
He also noted that disruptions in global supply due to the Iran-Israel conflict could further increase demand within India.
The programme was conducted by Bajrang Jakhar.
