Volvo Cars to introduce ethanol-compatible vehicles in India

Volvo Cars plans to introduce ethanol-compatible vehicles in India, supporting its 2040 net-zero emissions and circular economy goals, says Volvo Cars APEC head Martin Persson. The new EX30 SUV will join India’s electric lineup, alongside the XC60 and XC90 models compatible with E20 fuel. Persson expressed optimism about India’s market growth, highlighting sustainability and expanding product range as key strategies for future success.

Volvo Cars would introduce vehicles compatible with ethanol-blended fuels in India, aligning with the global trend of switching over to alternative fuels. This action is in line with Volvo’s overarching sustainability objectives, which include reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and embracing circular economy principles by 2040, said Martin Persson, head of Volvo Cars APEC.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Persson stated that the EX30, a new SUV, will be the next addition to Volvo’s electric lineup in India.

“Sustainability is deeply ingrained in our identity and is crucial for our future. By 2040, our aim is to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and operate as a circular economy. As part of this strategy, we continually seek ways to enhance our sustainability impact and performance. In India, our next step, will be introducing the XC60 and XC90 models compatible with E20 fuel,” he stated while answering on ethanol-powered vehicles.

It is an ambitious strategy from Volvo to bring in one new full-electric vehicle each year, making the mark in 2022 with the successful launch of the XC40 Recharge, followed by the all-electric C40, and then the single-motor XC40 Recharge.

According to Persson, Volvo would be bullish on growth in India, pegging it at no less than 4–5 years. Though not giving numbers, he said with a wider range of products and the growing environmental concern among Indians, the company has a very optimistic outlook.
