Wheat arrival picks up pace, 74% crop reaches mandis in a week

Wheat arrivals surged in Ludhiana mandis, with 74.1% of the season’s total arriving between April 18–24. Of the 5.4 LMT received, 86% was purchased, led by private traders buying 1.2 LMT. The procurement process, which runs through mid-May, is progressing smoothly, with 95% of lifting completed within 72 hours, officials report.

Ludhiana: Arrival of the wheat crop in grain markets of the district has picked up pace. Approximately 74.1% of wheat, which has been sent to the mandis here this procurement season, arrived in this week. A report from the district food and supply controller office said 86% of the wheat crop that arrived in grain markets had been purchased by agencies and traders.

According to the official wheat procurement report dated April 24, the progressive arrival of wheat in grain markets of Ludhiana district was around 5.4 lakh metric tonnes. A week before that, on April 18, progressive arrival of wheat in grain markets stood at about 1.4 LMT, which showed that 4.02 LMT of wheat arrived in mandis in one week. Between April 18 and April 24, around 74.1% of the wheat arrived in grain markets.

According to the report, out of the 5.4 LMT that arrived in grain markets, agencies and traders purchased 4.6 LMT or 86%. The report also said as compared to last year, the percentage of wheat arrival in grain markets of Ludhiana district so far stood at 65.43%.

On the status of lifting, the report said the percentage within 72 hours stood at 95%. An official from the district food and supply controller office said wheat procurement starts on April 1 and ends by around May 15, so they hope to procure 100% of the wheat that had arrived in grain markets of the district. He added that the process was going on smoothly and measures were in place to ensure that farmers did not face issues during procurement.

The report said private traders remained the single largest purchasers of wheat crop in grain markets of Ludhiana district, buying 1.2 lakh MT, which shows that they accounted for 27.1% of the total purchase in grain markets.
