Wheat stocks in Kazakhstan exceed 16 mln tons
Kazakhstan entered 2026 with about 20 million tonnes of grain stocks, mainly food-grade wheat. Wheat reserves total 16.25 million tonnes, ensuring domestic supply and export stability. Major stocks are in Akmola, North Kazakhstan and Kostanay, while exports in 2025 remained strong.
Kazakhstan maintains substantial grain reserves at the start of 2026. According to the Bureau of National Statistics, as of January 1, 2026, the country had about 20 million tonnes of cereals and legumes in stock, including rice. The bulk of these reserves consists of food-grade crops, ensuring sufficient supply for the domestic market.
Of the total, 16.5 million tonnes are food crops, 1.4 million tonnes are seed stock, and 2.1 million tonnes are designated for feed. Wheat accounts for the largest share of these reserves, highlighting its role as a key crop for Kazakhstan’s agricultural sector and export capacity.
Specifically, wheat stocks total 16.25 million tonnes, including 14.3 million tonnes of food wheat, 1.13 million tonnes of seed wheat, and about 811,000 tonnes of feed wheat. These reserves provide market stability and support Kazakhstan’s ongoing participation in international grain trade.
Other cereals in stock include 2.04 million tonnes of barley, 193,000 tonnes of corn, 281,000 tonnes of rice, and around 17,000 tonnes of rye. The largest grain reserves are concentrated in Akmola, North Kazakhstan, and Kostanay regions, which together form the core of the country’s national stocks.
Specifically, Akmola region holds over 6 million tonnes, North Kazakhstan about 5.06 million tonnes, and Kostanay nearly 5 million tonnes. Smaller but significant reserves are found in Karaganda and East Kazakhstan regions.
At the same time, Kazakhstan remains active in grain exports. Between January and October 2025, the country exported 6.3 million tonnes of wheat, 1.4 million tonnes of barley, and smaller volumes of corn and oats. Imports were much lower, totaling 491,000 tonnes of wheat, confirming Kazakhstan’s position as a key regional grain exporter.
