Why sugarcane price hike may not benefit Punjab, Uttar Pradesh farmers

The Narendra Modi government’s move to hike the support price or Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for the sugarcane crop by 8 per cent amid the farmers’ protest will not have a significant impact in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
This is so because these states have a provision of a State Advised Price (SAP), which is significantly higher than the FRP. In fact, farmers are already earning approximately Rs 40-60 per quintal more under SAP than the newly announced rate by the Centre.
