Winter air pollution: Punjab bans Pusa44 rice, aims to cut stubble burning by 50% this season
Punjab officials are confident of reducing stubble burning incidents by 50% this season by cultivating quicker-maturing paddy varieties. Stubble burning after rice harvest contributes to Delhi’s winter pollution. Currently, Punjab has recorded 561 farm fires between September 15 and October 3, almost double that of previous years. Punjab’s Chief Minister has banned the Pusa44 rice variety to address this issue, but some farmers oppose the ban due to higher yields. However, officials remain optimistic, citing increased adoption of shorter-duration paddy varieties that require less water and produce less stubble.
