Women sugarcane farmers training
More than 100 women farmers were provided training on the best management practices in sugarcane farming by Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) last week.
The insititute’s CEO, Professor Santiago Mahimairaja, said they conducted a two-day workshop for Labasa, Seaqaqa, Lautoka and Ba sectors.
“We have got very good responses from them and they were very enthusiastic,” he said. The accomplished soil scientist said this was the first such training for many of the women and they were requesting for more in the near future.
“There has been growing interest of sugarcane farming with the women and we demonstrated to them how to prepare the field and also held a practical session as well.”
Dr Mahimairaja added SRIF was hosting a technical training on better use of climate information at a community level in the cane belt areas of the country.
“Sugarcane farmers face many challenges and there are many factors to consider in sugarcane production.
“In this workshop, we are discussing the weather and climate problems, challenges and requirements with reference to sugarcane production,” Dr Mahimairaja added.
